EuroProjekt: Rollers & Volkswagens in the Irish Midlands
Last weekend I ended up in Mullingar, crashing at Nathan’s while he was house-sitting. It was one of those weekends where nothing's planned, but everything kind of falls into place. Nathan had just finished up his BMW E28 — a proper clean build — and the plan was simple: go grab some pizza, and shoot some rollers around golden hour. It’s honestly hard to beat driving around the backroads of Westmeath in a classic German machine, camera gear rattling around in the boot, sun hanging low. Simple things.
We ended up linking with Nathan’s brother Conor — who, I’ve got to say, is one of the slickest videographers I’ve met in a while. Always got an eye for framing things just right, and a calm vibe that makes shooting effortless. Between the three of us, the E28, and the road, we managed to lock in some seriously smooth shots.
Next morning, with the buzz still fresh from the previous night’s shoot, we took a short spin over to Kilbeggan for the Midlands Volkswagen (MLVW) Show. A few of our mates were going, and it felt like the right call. The weather was proper scorching — like full-on heatwave status — but a fresh breeze kept things cool enough to wander.
The show itself had some quality German metal on display. Brian Dunne had his gorgeous '76 Porsche 911 out, sitting like a dream in the sun, and TJ Carroll’s Jetta was on point as always — stanced just right, super clean. The crew had also upgraded to a new indoor venue this year which added a whole different dimension to the event. It gave everything a bit more structure while still keeping the laid-back MLVW atmosphere.
I love this part of the car scene in Ireland — these semi-rural meets where the roads are quiet, the people are sound, and the cars have stories. There’s something honest about it. Not overly curated, just real people bringing out the cars they’ve worked on, parked up against sheds and stone walls, swapping stories and catching sunburns.
It’s weekends like this that make the whole car scene feel worthwhile. Pizza, rollers, sunshine, and good company. And a classic BMW that looks at home whether it’s rolling through town or soaking in the evening light beside a lough.
